Pokémon Go has announced its New Year’s event, which it is putting on with the help of the Slowpoke evolution line, featuring festive Pokémon.
Pokémon GO will be ringing in the New Year with everyone else, and it’s bringing Slowbro along for the party. The game is currently running its holiday event with boosted Ice-type Pokémon and festive costumes, and that will roll right into this newly announced celebration. 2022 is looking bright for Pokémon GO fans.
This isn’t the first time Pokémon GO has celebrated holidays. Players were able to participate in the Halloween Mischief event the second half of October, and while Thanksgiving didn’t technically get its own event, it did herald the end of the Season of Mischief. December has had its own events and theming, proving that the 5-and-a-half-year-old game still has plenty in store for its fans. The recent launch of Pokémon GO Season 10 brought in what the game calls its Season of Heritage, which may tie into Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which is due out on January 28th. That event appears to be continuing into the New Year.

A new Pokémon GO blog post announces the upcoming New Year’s celebration, with a little special attention being paid to Slowpoke and its evolutions. Running from December 31st at 10:00 p.m. to Tuesday, January 4th at 8 p.m. local time, the event picks up where the holiday event leaves off and continues the Season of Heritage story. For the first three days of the New Year’s celebration, fireworks will appear in the game, and with them come bonuses: 2x Hatch Stardust, 2x Hatch Candy, and ½ Hatch Distance, great boons for those looking to hatch eggs. While Pokémon GO’s eggs have faced criticisms of being akin to loot boxes and gambling, plenty of gamers still need to hatch them, so this event should help.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. There’s Timed Research that can be completed during the event, and with it come Pokémon specially decked out in New Year’s gear, including starter Pokémon in party hats and the Slowpoke line wearing New Year’s glasses that are a bit behind the times. These festive Pokémon will also appear in wild encounters, raids, and eggs, so gamers will have multiple chances to catch them. The event also includes some new avatar items and stickers in the in-game shop and found at Pokéstops and by opening Gifts.
So, it’s clear to see that Pokémon GO is looking to close 2021 with a bang. That should continue right into 2022, since Niantic has already announced the January 2022 Community…
