2021 is the year of the ox and Pokémon Go is celebrating with a brand new event featuring red and bovine Pokémon. It also marks the return of two Legendary Pokémon and the debut of a Mega Pokémon.

Latios and Latias of the Hoenn region will be appearing in Legendary Raids for the duration of the event. Mega Gyarados, the powered-up version of Gyarados, will make its Pokémon Go debut to give trainers a powerful Water-type Pokémon to battle with.

While Mega Gyarados will be a staple of Mega Raids in Pokémon Go moving forward, Latios and Latias will be around for a limited time, so trainers will want to know which Pokémon to take into battle against them as soon as possible.

Latias and Latios are coming to ‘Pokemon Go’ Niantic

POKEMON GO LATIOS/LATIAS RAID COUNTERS

Both Latios and Latias are Psychic and Dragon-type Pokémon, making them weak to Ghost, Dark, Bug, Fairy, Ice and Dragon attacks.

There are plenty of Pokémon, especially Legendaries, that can help take down Latios and Latias, especially if they are Dragon types. Pokémon like Giratina and Rayquaza will work well, but just be wary of Latios and Latias’ own Dragon-type attacks that can take down your Pokémon.

A couple of Mega Pokémon will also do well against the two and power up you and your friends’ attacks.

Here are some options to take on Latios and Latias in Pokémon Go:

  • Mega Abomasnow with Powder Snow and Weather Ball (Ice).
  • Mega Gengar with Lick and Shadow Claw.
  • Mega Houndoom with Snarl and Foul Play.
  • Mega Charizard X with Dragon Breath and Dragon Claw.
  • Salamence with Dragon Tail and Outrage.
  • Dragonite with Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor.
  • Rayquaza with Dragon Tail and Outrage.
  • Dialga with Dragon Breath and Draco Meteor.
  • Giratina with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball.
  • Weavile with Snarl and Avalanche.

POKEMON GO MEGA GYARADOS RAID COUNTERS

Mega Gyarados is making its Pokémon Go debut and it’s one of those Mega Pokémon that changes the original typing of its target.

Gyarados is normally a Water and Flying-type Pokémon, but upon Mega Evolving, it changes to a Water and Dark-type Pokémon. This makes it weak to Grass, Electric, Bug, Fighting and Fairy-type attacks.

Here are some great options to take on Mega Gyarados:

  • Mega Venusaur with Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant.
  • Mega Abomasnow with Razor Leaf and Energy Ball.
  • Mega Ampharos with Charge Beam and Thunder.
  • Zekrom with Charge Beam and Wild Charge.
  • Electivire with Thunder Shock and Wild Charge.
  • Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch.
  • Conkeldurr with Counter and Dynamic Punch.
  • Breloom with Counter and Dynamic Punch.
